The McLean Series c1919 |
|
The McLean series of postcards really do show what the well dressed caver wore in the early 1900's. Ladies and girls in long dresses and big hats, men and boys with jackets and ties - and remember, it would have been hot summer when these folks came to explore the caves.
In those days cameras needed lots of light to get a good picture. All of these photographs were taken near the southern end of the Abercrombie Archway where the light streams in and highlights some huge stalagmites.
These cards were printed in half-tone (dots) |
|
Included in this series are two cards of local interest.
< This is of the new Abercrombie River Bridge built in 1919.
The Belmore Dam near Trunkey Creek. This was the site of the gold stamper batteries > |

All six photographs were on one side of this folder and on the reverse side was a brief history of the Ribbon Gang Bushrangers, a location map and a "Wacko Letter" (a tick box letter from the sender)
When this folder card was first produced there were a number of spelling and caption errors and the card had to be reprinted - but not before quite a few of the reject cards were sold. (The print run was 4,000)
Folder cards are now all sold out. |
